Frequently asked
questions.
We recommend booking 12–18 months in advance for peak season expeditions (June–August Arctic; November–January Antarctica). Some routes — particularly Ross Sea and South Georgia — sell out 2 years ahead. Off-season and shoulder-season departures often have more flexibility.
Most TerraNova expeditions are rated Easy to Moderate. You should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain for 2–3 hours and boarding Zodiac craft from a moving vessel. No mountaineering or expedition experience is required. We offer one Challenging-rated route (Antarctica: Ross Ice Shelf) that requires moderate hiking fitness.
All accommodation aboard the vessel, all meals and non-alcoholic beverages, Zodiac excursions and guided landings, expedition jacket and rubber boots loan, naturalist lectures and photography workshops, and full carbon offset certification. Flights to/from embarkation ports, travel insurance, and alcoholic beverages are not included.
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation coverage is mandatory for all TerraNova expeditions. We recommend policies with a minimum $500,000 medical evacuation limit. We can recommend specialist polar travel insurers upon booking.
Deposits of 25% are required to secure your place. Full balance is due 120 days before departure. Cancellations 120+ days prior: deposit refundable minus a $500 admin fee. 60–119 days: 50% of total cost refundable. Under 60 days: no refund. We strongly recommend trip cancellation insurance.
A maximum of 12 guests per expedition — permanently. This is not a commercial constraint but a founding principle of TerraNova. We have declined to scale despite demand. Twelve guests allows for genuine wildlife immersion, personalized naturalist attention, and minimal ecosystem impact.
MV TerraNova Spirit is a purpose-built ice-class expedition vessel (ice class 1B). She carries 12 guests in 12 en-suite cabins ranging from single berths to a panoramic suite. Facilities include a lecture theatre, library, panoramic observation deck, dining room, and mudroom for expedition gear.
Yes. Approximately 30% of our guests travel solo. We offer single-occupancy cabins at a 40% single supplement, or we can attempt to match solo travellers for twin-share occupancy (subject to availability and mutual agreement).
